Dr Jacques Doubell is a skilled and dedicated cardiologist who recently joined Mediclinic Durbanville, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for cardiac health.
The foundation for Dr Doubell’s expertise in cardiology was laid as early as his undergraduate training when he received recognition as the best final year medical student in cardiology and consolidated during his training as a Cardiology Fellow at Tygerberg Hospital, widely recognised as the top cardiology training centre in the country.
At the conclusion of his cardiology training he completed the prestigious RC Fraser International Fellowship in Cardiovascular Intervention at St Thomas Hospital in London. He was then appointed as Consultant Cardiologist in the Division of Cardiology of Stellenbosch University at Tygerberg Hospital where he focussed on enhancing his skills in general cardiology and has developed a focus in complex coronary interventions and structural heart interventions.
His passion for cardiology was sparked by his father, a prominent cardiologist and head of the Division of Cardiology at Tygerberg Hospital. Although he explored various medical specialities, cardiology always intrigued him, with the ability to make a significant impact on patients' quality and quantity of life, coupled with the hands-on, knowledge-based nature of cardiology, solidifying his decision to pursue specializing in cardiology. He finds immense reward in seeing critically ill patients recover quickly and continue to lead healthy lives.
Dr Doubell's academic journey is marked by excellence. He achieved an A-aggregate in matric with six distinctions and graduated cum laude with an MBChB from Stellenbosch University in 2012. His accolades include receiving the Francie van Zyl Medal for the best MBChB student at Stellenbosch University. He further distinguished himself by earning a Fellowship in Internal Medicine (FCP) and a Master of Medicine (MMed) cum laude.
He has participated in and conducted several studies, including research on valvular heart disease (mitral stenosis and mitral valve prolapse) and improving vascular access during coronary angiography. His work has been presented at national and international conferences, and he has several publications in leading journals. His publication on improving vascular access, published during his training as a cardiologist, earned him the award for the best publication in the Division of Cardiology of Stellenbosch University in 2021.
His professional experience is extensive and varied. He completed his medical internship at East London Hospital Complex, followed by community service at Frere Hospital and Cecilia Makiwane Hospital. He then served as a Medical Officer at Karl Bremer Hospital and as an Internal Medicine Registrar at Tygerberg Hospital before initiating his cardiology training.
